San Francisco — In a move that could reshape the way students interact with artificial intelligence, OpenAI has unveiled a new feature within ChatGPT called “Study Mode” — a tool designed to encourage deeper learning and critical thinking rather than simply providing quick answers.
Launched on Tuesday, July 29, Study Mode turns ChatGPT into a digital tutor, guiding users through problems using Socratic questioning, tailored hints, and step-by-step explanations. The aim is to move AI from being a “homework helper” to a responsible educational companion.
“We want ChatGPT to act less like a cheat sheet and more like a coach,” said Joanne Jang, Head of Product at OpenAI. “Study Mode creates a learning environment where students are encouraged to reflect, reason, and build real understanding.”

The release of Study Mode comes as schools, colleges, and universities worldwide grapple with how to integrate AI in classrooms while curbing its misuse. Since the public debut of ChatGPT in late 2022, educators have expressed concerns over students using AI to bypass critical thinking — turning to it for direct answers on essays, problem sets, and even exam questions.
In response, OpenAI has been working with more than 40 education institutions, including both U.S. and international universities, to understand how students learn and what teachers expect from AI systems. How Study Mode Works

Importantly, Study Mode doesn’t require retraining OpenAI’s underlying GPT models. Instead, it uses carefully crafted system-level instructions that adjust how the assistant responds, allowing the company to quickly iterate based on real-world feedback.
